Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Media Studies

Santa Clara University

Job Description

The Department of Communication at Santa Clara University (SCU) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Media Studies to begin in Fall 2025.  We seek a teacher-scholar who engages in innovative, theory-driven research and teaching in areas such as: media effects and uses, media representations, media equity and social justice, persuasion, media psychology, media stereotypes, or identity construction, among other media-related topics. We are particularly interested in a colleague who addresses these topics with a focus on US-based Latino/a/x/e or Black experiences and whose research primarily uses quantitative social science methodologies.

Candidates should be able to teach our department’s undergraduate quantitative methods, mixed methods, media studies, and/or global media courses, as well as courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise, at the lower- and upper-division levels. Applicants should be able to provide evidence of successful teaching that involves active, engaged teaching methods with clear learning outcomes taught in small classes. Candidates should also demonstrate promise in scholarly research, including the ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals. The completion of a PhD in Communication or a closely related discipline in the social sciences is required by the time of appointment.

The department will give additional preferences to candidates whose research and teaching intersect with one or more of the following departmental foci: interpersonal, organizational, health, strategic, or global communication. Preference will also be given to applicants whose work aligns with one of Santa Clara University’s Centers of Distinction: Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, or the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education. Candidates may also wish to describe how their work could be inter- or cross-disciplinary with departments such as Political Science, Public Health, Ethnic Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology, or others.

Applicants are invited to visit the university’s website at www.scu.edu for descriptions of the university’s mission and the department’s website at www.scu.edu/communication to learn about our courses, faculty, and students.

Over the last decade, the department and the University have recruited an increasingly diverse faculty, and enrolled more diverse and low-income students. The College of Arts & Sciences is conducting its third cluster hire in the area of Inequality & Social Justice, which provides participants with mentorship, peer support and an interdisciplinary intellectual community to support their scholarly and creative work.

Candidates who can contribute to SCU’s growing diversity are encouraged to apply and to identify their strengths or experiences related to achieving this goal in their letter of application.
