Introduce:

Since its founding in 1929, Chongqing University has established a School of Liberal Arts, offering classes and programs related to literature, history, and philosophy, with many renowned modern humanities scholars teaching here. In 1952, during the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions, these disciplines were distributed to other universities. In the new century, the university has accelerated its development into a comprehensive research university, committed to gradually restoring programs in literature, history, and philosophy.

In May 2011, the university established the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS), adopting a construction philosophy of “small and refined, high starting point, comprehensive and interdisciplinary.” The IAS includes six research centers: Literature and Culture, History, Philosophy, Classics, Anthropology, and Political Economy and Law, along with several comprehensive innovation research platforms. It recruits excellent faculty from home and abroad, incubates and nurtures high-level basic humanities disciplines, builds a general humanities education system, and intensively conducts various high-end academic conferences, lectures, salons, and workshops to foster a humanities academic and cultural atmosphere and cultivate graduate students.

Leveraging the faculty and academic strengths of the IAS, the university established the Liberal Arts School in October 2012, and began enrolling undergraduates in the fall of 2013. The Liberal Arts education integrates advanced international experiences with Chinese traditions, adopting a unique path with a “residential school system” and an integrated curriculum that combines Chinese and western academic traditions. It implements a broad-based training model and classic reading teaching to cultivate top-notch interdisciplinary talents in basic humanities, aiming to become the best liberal arts education experimental base in China and the best cradle for basic humanities talents in Western China.

The IAS and Liberal Arts School share administrative offices. Since their establishment, they have been developing rapidly and attracting widespread attention. The School’s development consistently serves the overall strategy of the university, gathering top scholars from around the world, encouraging cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, and advocating a talent cultivation philosophy that integrates ancient and modern, Eastern and Western knowledge. This approach has continuously strengthened the development of basic humanities disciplines, professional talent training, and general education throughout the university, creating a mutually supportive and promoting three-in-one system and exploring a distinctive path for building basic humanities in a science and engineering-oriented university.

To support the overall strategy of building a world-class university, the university launched the “Basic Humanities Revitalization Action Plan” in 2020, further promoting the rapid development of basic humanities. The plan aims to establish a comprehensive, moderately scaled, distinct, and sustainable basic humanities structure that aligns with the development positioning of a world-class university by 2025. It plans to establish the School of Arts and Humanities and three departments (Literature, History, and Philosophy) along with several interdisciplinary research centers, and gradually build three primary discipline doctoral programs.

In October 2022, the Departments of Chinese Language and Literature, History, and Philosophy were formally established, further optimizing the school’s discipline layout and governance system. This enhancement strengthens the departments’ active roles in team building, talent cultivation, academic research, domestic and international cooperation and exchange, and social services. The three departments leverage their autonomy to plan and refine distinctive directions, forming several growing research clusters, and further streamlining the affiliation of the existing research centers and platforms within the school. In April 2023, the university summarized the successful experience and good reputation of talent cultivation at the Liberal Arts School and officially established the “Liberal Arts College,” appointing Professor Lin Jianhua, former President of Chongqing University and Director of the Future Education Management Research Center at Peking University, as the honorary dean.

As of now, the school offers three undergraduate programs: Chinese Language and Literature, History, and Philosophy; three primary discipline master’s programs: Chinese Language and Literature, History, and Philosophy; and a primary discipline doctoral program in Chinese Language and Literature. This has initially realized an integrated bachelor’s-master’s-doctoral training system, with over 200 undergraduates and more than 120 graduate students enrolled.

The school also has two provincial and ministerial base platforms: the “Economics and Strategy Research Institute” and the “Research Center for the Society and Culture of Yangtze River Basin,” as well as two university-level key research bases: the “Research Center for Contemporary China” and the “CQU Center for Classical Lexicography Research.” Together with three administrative offices, the school has 76 staff members, including 66 full-time teachers (all with doctoral degrees), and all its endeavors are continuously thriving.

“Chongqing: Journey to New Accomplishments.” We sincerely appreciate the long-term attention and support from scholars and society at large both at home and abroad!
