Job Description

POSITION GOALS
  • The Professional Advisor is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience for students in an effort to increase student retention, success and completion.
  • The Professional Advisor will leverage a holistic approach in assisting students with goal setting and providing continuous communication and follow-up to maximize goal attainment.
  • The Professional Advisor will demonstrate and promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Advise prospective and current student cohorts on specific academic matters including but not limited to: choosing a course/major, course load, withdrawal/termination process, schedule adjustment, and career and transfer opportunities.
  • Participates in all retention and completion activities, including but not limited to Early Alert advising.
  • Provide and analyze data on student progress and completion rates.
  • Connect students to academic and student service resources to support student success.
  • Engage with faculty, academic departments and professional staff in student related services.
  • Participate in events including but not limited to: Open House, High School Recruitment, New Student Orientation, Career and Transfer events.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Develop and deliver orientations, workshops, seminars, and other professional development topics to all stakeholders, both in-person and online.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Provide services at all three college locations, both in-person and virtually.
  • Creates a welcoming and efficient environment by greeting students, answering the phone in a professional manner and responding to email in a timely fashion, etc.
  • Ability to work directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Follow all college policies, procedures and processes.
  • Participate in committees and activities as assigned.
  • Comply with all safety, fire, and smoking regulations.
  • Complete all mandatory compliance and safety training as scheduled by Human Resources.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred.
  • Experience in academic advisement; Community College and Guided Pathways to Success framework preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including, but not limited to friendliness, courteousness, thoroughness and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, leadership, facilitation, and training skills
  • Ability to work as a part of a cross-functional team in an innovative environment, and independently as needed.
  • Excellent computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office Suite, LMS, Self Service, Early Alert Systems, Video Conferencing and others as needed.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and improvement.

Special Instructions for Applicants

Standard working hours are as follows: Academic Year: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. four days per week and 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. one day per week (Tuesday or Wednesday); Summer: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
