Clackamas Community College (CCC) seeks to hire Teaching Assistant - Spanish positions for the 2024-2025 academic year. These are part-time, non-benefits eligible classified staff position.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

:

This position is responsible for providing bilingual support to Spanish speaking students in Spanish Math, Writing, and First Year Experience courses. This position will work directly with the students in these courses to assist students with accessing classroom materials, accessing additional academic supports for individual students as appropriate, and navigating campus systems. This role will also support faculty with assigned class activities and/or group work and monitor online forums as needed.
Work hours will vary, depending on the need of the classes and instructor each term.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

:

Bilingual class support
  • Work with students in the Spanish language Math, Writing, and First Year Experience courses and provide in class support to students including accessing course materials, navigating campus systems (e.g. Outlook, myClackamas portal, Moodle, etc.) and assisting with assigned class activities and online forums in Spanish and English.
  • Establish a friendly, encouraging and welcoming environment for students in these courses.
  • Develop "how-to" materials and presentations on topics necessary to be successful in online and face-to-face course modalities. Assist with website updates and identifying key pages that need Spanish translation.
  • Assist students with learning how to access course materials, find and post assignments, troubleshoot technology needs, and view and respond to email.
  • Review and be familiar with key course requirements including assignment deadlines and outcomes and support students by resolving questions, connecting them to campus and community resources, and providing individualized support to students that need supplemental help.
  • Collaborate with Math, FYE and English faculty to attend classes as needed and the student to ensure that the student is placed at the appropriate course level and implement placement modifications as appropriate.
  • Teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to test taking.
  • Serve as mentor and provide student with positive and constructive feedback and encouragement as appropriate.
  • Triage questions, seek answers, and advocate for students where needed.
  • Serve as a resource for students to identify and assess barriers that affect academic and professional success with sensitivity and awareness. Assist students with developing a plan to overcome barriers and achieve success. Refer to appropriate student services, including Academic Advising and Career Services, Workforce Services, Veterans Services, Financial Aid, and Disability Resource Center.
  • Utilize technology and software, including Colleague, Navigate, Outlook, Zoom, as well as other internal and external databases and software to accomplish job functions including accurate data entry, student record maintenance, student communication, and reports.
  • Work with individuals that may be frustrated or dissatisfied in a productive and respectful manner, with the goal of de-escalating issues and resolving identified concerns.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with staff and faculty in appropriate departments. Participate in committees, professional and college trainings, staff meetings, and related professional activities as appropriate and/or requested.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and follow state and federal requirements, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications




REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

:
Bilingual in Spanish and English with both oral and written communication.

  • AAS degree and any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described.



PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working with college students as a tutor.
  • Student services experience in the areas of admissions, advising, financial aid, etc.
  • Previous experience with unemployed, under-employed, low-income, veterans, re-entry, disabled, dislocated workers, English Language Learners, GED students, first generation immigrants and/or first-generation students.
  • Experience in case management, crisis intervention, employment services, recruitment, training programs, social work or related experience. Experience working with workforce systems and resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS

:

The position requires minimal (20-40%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects. Frequent (51-80% of the time) use of office equipment.

The position requires minimal (5-20%) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work are not difficult, and only require some degree of agility and hand eye coordination.

The work environment is usually well-protected, with minimal hazards or obstacles (5-20%). There is little or minimal element of personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are usually comfortable, with minimal (5-20%) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc. Position may have minimal responsibility for driving.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

:

Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to part-time and student workers.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

:

Works under the general direction of the Director of Adult Education.
