Essential Job Duties

NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Fitness. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working as part of a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student staff to create world-class wellness, recreation and fitness programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Fitness.

The Coordinator, Fitness directs and is responsible for group fitness programs (fitness classes). The candidate will ensure all programs operate within required risk management procedures and will oversee the implementation of safety standards.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing leadership and directing the group fitness program (fitness classes) offering more than 85 classes per week. Independently managing day-to-day operations that include scheduling classes and instructors, managing fitness performance studios, equipment maintenance, repair, upgrade and replacement and inventory control. Leading and instructing skills and techniques necessary for fitness classes — specific class formats include strength-training, mind-body, cardiovascular, and dance. 
  • Responsible for supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 60 student group fitness Instructors (equivalent to more than 10 FTE). Facilitate training, mentoring and continuing education opportunities for staff. Provide expert on-site supervision of staff.
  • Providing leadership and direction to the custom fitness program. Independently managing day-to-day operations that include coordinating classes/programs with external users, scheduling staff, and managing invoicing and payments. Developing and implementing innovative strategies to promote, package, and sell custom fitness classes. Facilitating training, mentoring, and continuing education opportunities for staff. 
  • Instructing nationally accredited Group Fitness Instructor Training course for potential student group fitness instructors each semester.
  • Directing and assist implementing fitness special events that include but not limited to welcome week events, RecFest, Wellness Days, DeStress Fest and specialty fitness programs.
  • Researching, negotiating, and obtaining agreements for hosting national fitness organizations at NC State.
  • Developing and executing an on-going customer service training program to ensure goals, objectives and outcomes are met.
  • Resolving conflicts and grievances within areas of responsibility.
  • Providing consultation and expert advice on best practices, industry trends and emerging issues to the Assistant Director, Fitness and department leadership.
  • Planning and assessing short and long-term business objectives and goals for fitness classes and custom fitness programs to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and potential sectors to target among staff and participants.
  • Assisting with the group training program.
  • Assisting with the development and administration of the fitness program budget.
  • Assisting with the development and execution of marketing strategies for fitness programs, services and special events.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management or a related field and two years of related experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, develop partnerships and work effectively as a member of a fast-paced, results-oriented team;
  • Ability to instruct multiple formats of group fitness classes (i.e, yoga, Pilates, BodyPump, Zumba, TRX, etc.);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of national trends and best practices in fitness programming;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories and practices in promoting student development and learning;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and developing leaders through practical application and learning;
  • Demonstrated success managing, supervising, and mentoring student employees;
  • Commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management or a related field.
  • Two years of experience with group fitness program planning and implementation in a collegiate wellness and recreation environment. This may include a graduate assistantship.
  • National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) Accredited Personal Training certification or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist.
