INSTRUCTOR, in this document, is defined as the “Instructor of Record” for the course, which could include full-time faculty.

LEADER, in this document, is defined as individuals designated by the HESO Faculty/Staff as qualified to lead HESO trips. Instructors will be Leaders for trips but should be accompanied by additional Leaders (e.g., asst trip leaders) who may be students, faculty, staff, alumni, contract employees, and/or practicum students.

Field trips are led by Department of Health and Exercise Studies Instructors and are assisted by Leaders with previous trip experience, professional guides, and/or HESM 402 practicum students. These individuals are responsible to the Instructor. Specific leadership responsibilities vary according to the activity, the participants, terrain, weather conditions, and the objectives of each outing. The responsibilities listed below are common to all field trips.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Meeting with or contacting the Instructor prior to the field trip to ensure a thorough understanding of course content, goals and objectives, safety policies and outing plans, and to determine the best role based on his/her needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Assisting the Instructor, as requested in organizing the loading and unloading of the vehicle, shared driving responsibilities where appropriate, clothing and equipment checks, and other tasks at the time of and upon the return of the class to campus.
  • Assisting the Instructor in the general supervision of the class (including input into route planning and logistics, course content and teaching methods).
  • Leadership and teaching as directed by the Instructor.

Typically overnight trips Friday-Sunday, one to three times per semester.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience 

Department Required Skills

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Public speaking in a group setting

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Previous experience in leading/assisting group management in an outdoor environment.
  • Professional training could be provided by industry leading organizations including but not limited to AMGA, ACA, Wilderness Medicine, ACCT, PMBIA, AIARE, NOLS, Outward Bound, FA/AED, etc.

Required License or Certification

  • Current First Aid & CPR/AED certification is required and must be maintained.
