DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration (ADM); Strategic Planning, Innovation and Research (SPIR); Assessments and Analytics (SHAA).

SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 43,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review, and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

Under the direction of the Nurse Practitioner Supervisor, the Clinical Project Assistant and Public Health Coordinator ("coordinator") uses skills as an experienced health education professional will a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures, resolves a wide range of issues, and demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

The coordinator will provide high level administrative and operational support to the Student Health Services (SHS) Clinical Management Team, SHS Quality Improvement Committee, Public Health Response Team, and other SHS committees and/or teams as needed. The coordinator will collect data and provide education and guidance to students with COVID-19, Tuberculosis, and other communicable diseases, when indicated, working closely with the SHS Infection Prevention Committee and UCSD Campus EH&S Team, in partnership with the County of San Diego Public Health Department as necessary while ensuring compliance with confidentiality and data security when handling sensitive information and protected health information.

The coordinator must possess a broad knowledge of health education, can apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding, and is comfortable contributing their unique perspective and experience in discussions with peers, supervisors, and administrative leadership. They will use professional health education concepts to educate patients and staff, acting as a resource for others when needed. The coordinator is able to utilize and apply UCSD Health, Campus, Student Health and Well-being, and SHS policies and procedures to analyze problems and determine solutions to a wide variety of issues. They can apply acquired skills and professional concepts to assist in resolving conflicts, channel complaints or problems to appropriate leadership, identify and implement best practices and lessons learned to facilitate process enhancements to prevent illness and promote health. The coordinator, acting on behalf of the SHS team, will work closely with the SHW SPIR Director and their team on strategic planning, innovation, and organizational development initiatives.

The coordinator, in collaboration with others, will conduct needs analyses and clinical data review in order to identify areas for additional education, promotion, and/or services and will, on an on-going basis, assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating changes to these areas. They will routinely monitor the effectiveness of education, promotion, and services and any associated process additions and/or changes and will repeat the evaluation cycle as needed for continuous process improvement. The coordinator will, in collaboration with supervisors and leadership, assist in education and training to peers, providers, and patients through tabling, virtual and/or in-person presentations, printed materials, and electronic communication and assess the effectiveness of such education and training as needed. The coordinator may be asked to complete other job duties as assigned with appropriate training.

The coordinator will possess exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they will be working on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors and must have the ability to use sound judgment when responding to issues or concerns. They must also possess the ability to remain calm, problem-solve under pressure, and produce quality work within the ever-changing healthcare environment. The coordinator will be a person of the highest integrity, placing equity and equality at the forefront of all decision making.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area (i.e., Public Health, Global Health, Health Administration) with two or more years related experience. Preferred: Master's degree in related area.

  • Minimum of two years of experience working in community outreach as a health educator, case investigator, or similarly equivalent role, preferably within the higher education level environment.

  • Minimum of one year working in a higher-level education outpatient healthcare clinic.

  • Thorough knowledge of the health promotion and education field.

  • Thorough knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs.

  • Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services.

  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact effectively with diverse client groups.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret and respond to client needs.

  • Effective organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision and demonstrated ability to connect with others using a virtual environment.

  • Experience with health education and community outreach.

  • Ability to use discretion, maintain utmost confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

  • As appropriate, submit incident reports into the UCSD SHW Incident Report System, RL Datix or current system in use, to report near-misses, process problems or patient or employee injury events. Attend required trainings and refreshers for use and proper steps to follow.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.

  • Demonstrated experience and competency with standard business equipment, computer technologies and a variety of software including system and networking software, Microsoft Office suite, email and a variety of web-based programs and browsers, with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the unit and the division.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
