Primary Purpose:

Supervises and provides guidance and work direction to Design and Construction Management designers and other contract and applicant design personnel in the modification of and addition to company Underground, Overhead and Gas distribution facilities. Responsible for supervising the correct, compliant and timely preparation of all project design documents arising from a portfolio of several hundred moderately to highly complex projects ranging in size from more than $25,000 to more than $1 Million and in some cases more than $12 Million.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and approves the work performed by design personnel to ensure safe, reliable, cost effective designs which conform to Company standards, safety orders and governmental rules and regulations, including costing (Project Management is responsible for the coordination and development of capital work totaling around $150 million).
  • Ensures the appropriateness of utility capital and new business expenditures.
  • Approves construction work orders within authorized monetary limits. Manages expenditures for assigned capital projects.
  • Manages project design requirements, status and costs for complex projects ensuring customer satisfaction; oversees design schedules, coordinating with internal and external customers; interpret Company policy to design team personnel and applicant/contract design personnel.
  • Reviews complex field investigations; analyze the feasibility of additions and modifications to gas and electric facilities; determines system integrity and growth potential; identifies project design objectives and resolve design conflicts as necessary.
  • Provides training and guidance to design personnel.
  • Supervises design personnel engaged in producing work orders for gas and electric service facilities which specify work, cost and scheduling responsibility.
  • Analyzes and monitors Design and Construction design personnel needs; determines priorities, monitors design work sequences and design schedule assignments to ensure customer and management deadlines are met.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Company policies, procedures and standards. Keeps informed of new developments in SDG&E design and construction standards, building codes, ordinances, safety orders, tariffs, governmental regulations and technical developments affecting project design management activities.
  • Conducts process audits to ensure quality, cost and employee performance expectations are met.
  • Provides required rate, tariff, technical and rule direction to customer Project Management design personnel; oversees communication with designers to explain and interpret Company procedures, policies and California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in business administration, project management, or related field; or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • 5 years related experience. Requires experience in distribution and project management.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of: business practices, job processes, engineering principles, OH, UG and Gas Standards, Design Manual, Service Planning Manual, Service Guide and California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) rules.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills required.
