Job Summary

Wilberforce University seeks a Network technician to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Sys/Network administrator to assist in deploying network hardware and cable/ Patch panel and manage data closet.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for installing low-voltage cables and systems for communication devices.
  • Focus areas will be Network Cabling, Patch panel and cable management installation, cable termination, Wireless Access Point placement, and labeling, and clean up/out of old cabling.
  • Rack and stack equipment including network switches and routers, servers, power distribution devices, equipment grounding, patch cable network connections to equipment including copper and fiber, and any other equipment necessary for data center operations.
  • Installing structured wiring including network drops and specialty cable with appropriate connectors in support of facilities operations for the corporate offices.
  • Installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of various cabling infrastructure.
  • Run low voltage cabling in commercial buildings, including drilling concrete walls and limited conduit work.
  • Ensuring all cables are neatly tied and bundled according to safety regulations.
  • Installing cable support structures such as j-hooks, cable racks, and inner duct.
  • Conduct tests to ensure all newly installed cable systems and component devices are operational.
  • Troubleshoot issues with cable networks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Retrofitting floors, ceilings, and walls with new cabling, Demo of old cabling, Low voltage, Installation, pulling wire, Inspection, Data Center cabling, Troubleshooting Layer 1 problems, Knowledge of toner functionality.
  • Working with Cat5/Cat6, climbing and working from a ladder, lift/move/install up to 50 lbs., use of hand tools, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of computing infrastructures.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to assist non-technical individuals with complex technical issues.
  • Great at organizing, prioritizing, and multitasking.
  • Good time-management skills and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with approximately 2 years of experience typically gained through skills/knowledge/abilities that include developing and supporting applications Systems.
  • Having 2-5 years of experience in a related technical role is required.
  • Working in small, tight confined spaces where movement can be restricted.
  • Physically demanding work that includes a great deal of walking, bending, twisting, squatting, climbing, and lifting while wearing a tool belt.
  • Highly motivated to take advantage of and seek out opportunities to learn.
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Outgoing, team-oriented and goal-driven.
  • Professional, strong work ethic, self-motivated, able to take on a task and bring it to completion without constant ongoing supervision.
  • Ability to work after hours.
