We are looking for a dynamic leader to help us drive efficiency, process improvement, and technological capability solutions into complex and challenging classified IT environments. You will partner with the Group Supervisor to guide our diverse team of highly technical engineers, information systems security officers, system administrators, and technology architects.   We are a hardworking, ambitious collection of professionals who embrace the vital mission of supporting the IT functions of a 1,350+ person organization. As the IT Infrastructure and Operations Assistant Group Supervisor, you will be responsible for the following...

  • Mission Effectiveness: Partner with the Group Supervisor to lead and inspire a team of 55+ IT engineers, system administrators, system architects, and computer build teams for mission effectiveness. You will support the sector's contributions to global challenges and solutions. Collaboratively develop a strategy to address complex IT challenges and explore new areas of support aligned with the sector's goals.
  • Organizational Competencies: You'll play a crucial role in identifying, improving, and developing the essential skills we need to succeed. Balancing staff workload, meeting IT support needs, and executing critical projects is key to managing staffing levels. Partner with sector stakeholders to understand how workflow, project prioritization, and sponsor deliverables will be impacted. Collaborate on key efforts as a technical leader in system evaluation efforts and internal process improvement. Ensure appropriate resources with the necessary competencies are available to meet the Organizational commitments.
  • Staff Development: You will assist in finding service and skills gaps and work to grow and develop the team by coaching, mentoring, and managing staff. Inspire and empower staff to create a culture that embraces technical excellence, innovation, diversity of thought, inclusion, and continuous improvement. Your role is to support the Group Supervisor by communicating a shared vision and collaborating with peer leaders to advance the strategy. You will ensure a robust pipeline of technically trained staff and work to develop leaders.
  • Resources: Support the Group Supervisor in developing and upgrading vital computing facilities and tools for our national air and missile defense capabilities. Assist in identifying and formulating the computational resource requirements needed to support the technical efforts. Help plan finances, facilities, and space, manage group expenses, and handle IT requirements.
  • Functional Responsibilities: Partner with sector stakeholders and senior and executive leadership teams to communicate priorities, understand workflow impacts, and maintain consistent and effective horizontal and vertical communication. Engage with the staff and recognize staff accomplishments. Foster collaboration and develop a team with diverse skills to ensure successful outcomes. Inspire the group to maintain an unwavering commitment to excellence in all they do.
  • Developing technology roadmaps: Support the Group Supervisor in identifying emerging technologies that could potentially benefit the sector’s mission and strategy, evaluate their viability, and lead the implementation process to integrate them into existing operations, essentially acting as a bridge between the technology landscape and the sector’s needs to drive innovation and competitive advantage.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Have 10+ years of experience in computer systems administration, with extensive knowledge of IT architecture, Linux and Windows systems, high-performance grid computing, network management, and storage solutions.
  • Have experience working with classified IT systems, including responsibility for compliance with government security policies and requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience leading an organization of 30+ staff responsible for enterprise-level IT operations.
  • Can set direction and implement plans to achieve goals and build capabilities.
  • Proven track record in building a technically strong and diverse workforce and developing future leaders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, written / oral communications, and organizational skills, with a record of accomplishment in a team environment.
  • Have a deep understanding of commercial enterprise technologies and experience capitalizing those for enterprise missions.
  • Have the capability to cultivate impactful relationships and can comfortably work multi-functionally within and across organizational boundaries.
  • Can obtain an interim Secret clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain a Secret-level clearance.  If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Have outstanding oral and written communication skills.

 

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • Possess a Master's or a PhD in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field.
  •  Demonstrated experience in understanding Special Access Programs and/or Sensitive Compartmented Programs, providing expertise in all security functions in accordance with the NISPOM, and other government regulations (e.g. DoD Manual 5205.07 & 5205.11Vols. I - IV, ICD 705, JSIG, RMF, DoD Manual 5105.21 Vols I-IV, and DoD Manual 5200.01 Vols I-IV).
  • Hold an active Top Secret security clearance and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI level clearance.
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding or developing systems architectures for complex computing environments, including experience implementing and governing computational grids and virtualized environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change in an organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Air and Missile Defense programs and sponsors.
  • Externally recognized as forward-thinking in computer system administration or IT architecture.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
