If you are an undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or another field pertaining to AI, we'd love to have you intern with us! The AI Group in the Research and Exploratory Development Department is an interdisciplinary team of researchers that is inventing the future of AI for the nation. As part of the Intelligent Systems Center (ISC), we often collaborate with roboticists and neuroscientists to take an interdisciplinary approach to these problems. Our team is committed to pioneering reserach with real-world mission intent. Successful interns tend to have strong programming and analytical skills, lots of initiative, and a drive to explore new approaches to hard problems. As a member of our team, your primary responsibility will be helping us train and evauate frontier AI models on one or two projects. You will write code, analyze data, and run experiments as a member of a small research team led by one of our experienced researchers. You will have access to world-class subject-matter experts working on applications of national importance such as national security and public health. If the results of your work are scientifically novel and impactful, you will have the opportunity to publish your work in a leading journal or conference.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you:
- Are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Are skilled in Python programming.
- Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Are a US citizen. To access APL’s facilities and networks, US Citizenship is required, subject to applicable laws.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you:
- Have taken courses in AI, machine learning, data science, multivariate statistics, computer vision, and/or natural language processing.
- Have prior experience working in an AI research lab, either on campus or through a previous internship.
- Have experience using Python AI libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Pytorch, OpenCV, or spaCy.
- Have experience working with Large Language Models and/or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
- Have experience working with Vision-Language Models such as Stable Diffusion, CLIP, or LLaVA.
- Have experience with 3D modeling tools such as Blender and neural rendering tools such as NerfStudio.
- Have previously published your work in scientific literature.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
