SUMMARY STATEMENT

The librarian is responsible for the management and development of the Hagerstown Community College Archives. In collaboration with both Library and Learning Support Services staff, provides virtual and face-to-face student success services under the supervision of, and working closely with, the Coordinator of Library and Learning Support Services.


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
A. The Archives & Student Success Librarian reports directly and is responsible to the Coordinator of Library and Learning Support Services.


B. This is a non-supervisory position. However, the librarian assists in providing direction to library student workers.


C. The Archives & Student Success Librarian coordinates most closely with the Coordinator of Library and Learning Support Services, as well as the library & LSC staff and members of the faculty.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A. Archives Management

1. Leads the college in implementing the archives collection policy, mission, and goals.
2. Demonstrates knowledge of archival standards and practices.
3. Appraises, organizes, and processes archival collections.
4. Provides preservation of archival materials such as paper-based records, photos, videos, and audio recordings.
5. Compiles finding aids and integrates them into a collection management system.
6. Provides archival reference and research services.
7. Engages in long- and short-range planning for archives.
8. Trains, oversees, and provides leadership to student workers who are assigned to projects in archives.
9. Stays abreast of archives and library issues and trends.


 

B. Student Success

1. Coordinates scheduling and delivery of information literacy instructional content in various digital and face-to-face formats across the curriculum.
2. Explores, develops, promotes, and assesses innovative online tools targeting off-campus learners to support academic instruction and student success.
3. Creates and implements online learning modules in support of information literacy, reference, and students’ acquisition of these skills.
4. Serves as embedded librarian in specific HCC courses and actively promotes embedded librarianship.
5. Supports both onsite and virtual reference services for students, faculty, staff, and community members.
6. Serves as a liaison and provides outreach to the Learning Support Center.
7. Explores emergent technologies to implement into library services.
8. Actively markets library services to both the campus and online college community to articulate the library’s impact on student success.


 

C. Performs other library services as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution, plus at least a year of experience in an academic or comparable library environment required. Or, must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS/MLS/IS program with a minimum of six credits completed, plus 2+ years of experience in an academic or comparable library environment may be considered.


 

Coursework and/or experience in archival work, including records management and archival organization. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with a community college environment.


 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

High level of expertise in reference services and use of online resources. Demonstratively strong customer service skills and ability to work with a variety of people including students, faculty, staff and the general public. Strong presentation/teaching skills. Proficiency in oral and written communication. Ability to use varying styles, approaches, skills and techniques that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multi-cultural workplace.


 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Normal office conditions with frequent interruptions. Environment to include lifting 20-25 lbs. Evening hours to 6 pm required.
