Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students with experience and exposure to the healthcare industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationships and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Our Summer 2025 Internship is June 9th or June 16th through August 15th, 2025.

As an intern at Blue Shield of California, you will:
- Participate in impactful projects during a 10-week internship program
- Undertake a 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
- Be invited to participate in BSC employee events and networking opportunities such as Employee Resource Groups, employee volunteer activities, and more
General Requirements:
- Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship
- Hybrid requirements - Preferably live within a 50-mile radius of a BSC office and be available for in-office collaboration 2 times per month
- Must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of the internship, with a graduation date of December 2025 or later
Your Role
The Promise Chief Medical Officer (CMO) team drives and implements Medi-Cal priorities, serves our members, providers, communities and colleagues as a resource to any Promise department for clinical or population-health concerns, and targets quality & equity as foundational to regulatory compliance, market competitiveness, and overall performance. The Promise CMO team is in a unique position of receiving strategic guidance from both Health Solutions and Medi-Cal leadership, while providing key clinical leadership and direction when developing short- and long-term strategies.
Internships within the Promise CMO team may include:
- Special Populations; focus on developing clinical and administrative processes to address painpoints for our populations of focus including but not limited to: members who are in long term care or ICFDD (Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled), members without immigration status who are on dialysis, members who belong to the duals population, members who are categorized as street medicine population, and foster children population who are not in our existing network.
- Collaboration across the Promise CMO team; collaborate with the Maternal and Infant Health Equity office, familiarize with cost of healthcare initatives, and other as needed duties assigned. The Promise CMO Team intern will report to a Program Manager, Consultant under the Special Populations Director. In this role he/she/they will work cross-functionally to support the special populations workstream and other duties as assigned.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Support the development of the special populations' initiative aimed at creating clinical processes and aligning the special population strategy and building a tactical workplan
- Work collaboratively with internal and external partners and stakeholders to address identified gaps in the existing processes for the special populations workstream
- Research evidence-based practices and nationally recognized criteria, designing, and recommending opportunities to enhance efforts through scaling best practices, technology platforms or other culturally relevant modes of communication, and insights and perspectives generated by impacted and diverse stakeholders
- Understand data trending across different segments of populations, with consideration for intersectional impacts
- Support cross functional project teams, including defining meeting agenda, leading meetings, capturing meeting notes and following-up on action items
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Actively pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in public health, business, health care or related field
- Minimum 1 year of related professional experience, project, or coursework
- Strong communication skills required, particularly writing for publication
- Proactive, solution focused mindset with demonstrated creative, problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the key synergies necessary among practices, payers, community, populations, and policy leaders to better align health care transformation efforts
- Passionate about changing healthcare and challenging the status quo to advance health equity
- Knowledge of Medi-Cal Department of Health Care Services and L.A. Care Health Plan is a plus
Pay Range:
The pay range for this role is: $25.00 to $30.00 for California.

Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.
