Position Summary

 

The Adult Education Instructor is responsible for the day-to-day instruction and supervision of adult learners. These individuals are attending class for the purpose of improving basic skills in order to obtain their GED. A major emphasis in this program is to become gainfully employed and/or to retain employment. 

Appropriate placement on the local hourly salary schedule $26 per hour (maximum 19 hours per week).

100% Grant funded and pending grant approval.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:  

  1. Administers assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in the adult education program; teach in both traditional and distance education formats; submit reports and data as required; participate in committee assignments assist with advocating adult education in the community.
  2. Teaches effectively.
  3. Plan, organize, and instruct courses in the day, evening, or online.
  4. Provide learning opportunities that draw upon and extend learner’s knowledge, skills, and interest. 
  5. Link instruction to the learner’s academic needs as determined by the results of valid, reliable assessment and reassessment. 
  6. Select materials and choose teaching styles that address individual learning styles. 
  7. Extend learners knowledge and competency using technology to aid learning. 
  8. Solve conflicts and problems in the classroom. 
  9. Provide a respectful and supportive learning environment. 
  10. Convey the expectation of success to adult learners. 
  11. Determine the support services needed and inform entering adult learners of available support services.
  12. Record the adult learner’s goals and needs.
  13. Acknowledge learner’s doubts or anxieties about entering the program. 
  14. Participate in all professional development opportunities provided by the instructional supervisor or the state adult and community education staff, including attendance at the Annual Adult Education Summer Conference. 
  15. Support state and national adult education and literacy advocacy organizations. 
  16. Administer assessment instruments to diagnose, evaluate, and place adult learners in adult education program. 
  17. Utilize the results of a properly administered assessment instrument and develop a plan of instruction (POI) that identifies each objective and/or skill for which each learner has demonstrated non- and/or partial-mastery. 
  18. Visit other classes for the purpose of observation, curriculum consultation, and coordination as directed by the Program Director.
  19.  Assist with grant applications and proposals as directed by the Program Director. 
  20. Assist with preparation and distribution of publicity materials and learner recruitment. 
  21. Assist with preparation and implementation of program activities such as workshops, in-service training, graduation, etc. 
  22. Require adult learners to engage in analysis, investigation, and interpretation as part of the learning process. Assist with learner intake and orientation by:
  23. Provide a welcoming, encouraging, and respectful atmosphere.
  24. Engage in an exchange of information with entering adult learners.
  25. Provide the programs philosophy, goals, instructional services, schedules, attendance policies, and any other relevant information.

  9. Ensures the positive promotion of the College and integration of all campuses within the College.  
  10. Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, and office hours.   
  11. Performs other duties as assigned. 
 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Ability to work the scheduled hours and location referenced in the job posting. 
  3. Outstanding interpersonal, communication, presentational, and writing skills.
  4. Ability to work efficiently with Microsoft Office Products.
  5. Effective written and oral communication skills.
  6. Experience working with computers and software.
  7. Ability to work well with others in an innovative team environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Teaching experience at the K-12 or postsecondary level.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Adult Education and life-long learning.
