Biology - Molecular Detection Laboratory Technician

Job Description

The person in this role is responsible for day-to-day operation of wastewater monitoring of potential pathogens on Hope College’s campus and other sites throughout Southwest Michigan as part of a community-level monitoring strategy for SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens. The person performs all laboratory activities related to molecular detection and data analysis of processed samples on a daily basis. The person may perform all laboratory activities related to monitoring, including in field sample acquisition, in laboratory processing of samples, extraction of nucleic acids for molecular analyses, and safe transport of samples to a local testing facility on an as needed basis. The person conducts these activities in accordance with all safety guidelines and in a timely manner such that results are available on a real time basis. The person interacts with members of Hope College faculty and staff and with local partners, including public health departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform molecular detection procedures using both qPCR and dPCR platforms
  • Perform next generation sequencing of selected disease targets
  • Maintain detection supplies inventory and coordination of ordering with the Project Manager
  • Ensure that data are entered into the laboratory data system, analysis of specialized data, and maintenance of metadata information
  • Regular review of molecular detection data and processes in coordination with the molecular detection team
  • Wastewater sample processing (DNA/RNA extraction) and/or wastewater sampling as needed
  • Coordination and execution of laboratory activities, including preparatory, chemical and molecular biology techniques
  • Adherence to all safety guidelines in laboratory and field settings
  • Interaction with local partners as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science
  • Excellent time management skills, ability to communicate effectively, and attention to detail
  • Experience in laboratory settings (molecular biology laboratory settings strongly preferred) 
  • Training and experience in molecular biology approaches/techniques
  • Ability to make and record scientific observations accurately, prepare and present scientific records and reports, and observe safety precautions
  • Must be able to work under little or no supervision, be prompt and deliver on daily requirements for sample acquisition and processing
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands

This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
