Job Description:

The Program Specialist (Aquatics) will:

  • Serve as the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and manage the operation and function of a 6 lane, 25-yard pool.
  • Monitor pool chemistry and ensure adjustments are made to ensure safety and compliance with local and state requirements.
  • Serve as the liaison to pool maintenance company including coordinating weekly and emergency service calls.
  • Attract, screen, supervise and provide continuous in-service trainings for all lifeguards while ensuring all certifications are up-to-date.
  • Ensure all pool operations are following NYS and County Board of Health standards.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the recreational athletic programs (aquatics, open recreation, intramural sports) to include, but is not limited to program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Develop and coordinate recreational and wellness programs and initiatives that supports student wellness, physical fitness, engagement, and personal development.
  • Hire, trains, and supervise part-time staff, including but not limited to: lifeguards and recreation attendants.
  • Develop and adhere to risk management protocols to ensure student safety and compliance with all regulations of recreation spaces to include the College's Pool, Fitness Center and Weight Room.
  • Assist in the supervision and planning for proper use of facilities in the Physical Education Building.
  • Assist with the compliance of federal Title IX regulations as they relate to gender equity in sports.
  • Support departmental operations/initiatives, including, but not limited to:  event attendance, office duties, meeting participation, etc.
  • Serve as a Hearing Officer to adjudicate alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Serve on campus committees as required.
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in the field of higher education particularly as they relate to student wellness, recreation, and intercollegiate athletic competition at community colleges.
  • All other duties, as assigned.                                                                               


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess either:

  • Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of experience in pool management or supervision; OR
  • High school or equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in pool management or supervision

It is also required that the incumbent possess and maintain:

  • The appropriate level Water Safety Instructor's Certificate; AND
  • Current lifeguard training certificate from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, YMCA/YWCA or Boy Scouts of America; AND
  • Current certification from an Aquatic Management School as a Certified Pool Operator; AND
  • Current certification in first aid, AED and CPR as a professional rescuer

Strong interpersonal skills and computer skills, to be able to create and manage facility and staff schedules are required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: It is preferred that the candidate possess:

  • Master's Degree
  • Five (5) years of experience in pool management


Additional Information:

SALARY & BENEFITS: The starting salary is $67,417. Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $83,518.  Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit and/or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.

 WORK SCHEDULE: Daytime shifts Monday-Friday with the availability to work nights and weekends when necessary.  The successful candidate will be expected to respond to lifeguard coverage and pool operations issues and communicate accordingly as they present themselves during any hours of operation.  Candidate may also need to serve as a lifeguard themselves for emergency coverage.
