Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Dean of Allied Health and Nursing and the Director of Nursing, the Retention Specialist is responsible for the education, retention, and success of students in the Nursing Program. The Retention Specialist assists in student registration, student orientation, boot camps, tutoring, and preparation for the NCLEX. The Retention Specialist is dedicated to conducting activities in a manner that promotes student success and lifelong learning. In addition, the Retention Specialist works closely with the nursing faculty to ensure that student learning needs are met. Assists and collaborates in the development and management of comprehensive programming of services designed to increase student retention. Educates students about course planning and registration processes. Initiates retention contacts with advisees who are behind in registration for the subsequent semester. Audits, monitors, and evaluates individual student academic progress. Makes appropriate referrals for concerns, registration, and general guidance. Academic advising and coaching to students in the Nursing Program. Works with the Dean and Director to organize and facilitate student assessment, orientation, registration, and tutoring. Works with the clinical faculty for clinical readiness at the beginning of each academic term. Collaborates with other departments to implement robust bridge programs for retention. Collaborates with local high schools to create bridge and/or cohort programs for nursing. Assists with the development and implementation of student remediation plans and delivery of sessions to students. Develops and facilitates student success initiatives for program-level nursing students.
Minimum qualifications & Requirements
Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Business Administration, or a related field is required, plus two years of related experience is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred. Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information in a written and oral format to students, faculty, and staff. Ability to work as an effective team member. Must have strong skills with computers, in setting priorities, organization, and time management. Must be flexible and have the ability to coordinate a variety of projects and tasks taking place at once, adapt to an ever-changing environment, and prioritize workload. Must have a strong commitment to excellent customer service, demonstrating a people-first attitude, patience to communicate with various interdisciplinary teams and users, attentiveness, creativity, and resourcefulness. Must be able to work with and communicate with a diverse population from different situations and backgrounds, including strong interpersonal skills and commitment to working with students and interacting with the public. Ability to learn, understand, and apply federal, state, and institutional regulations, policies, and procedures. Must be a self-starter, work independently, and require minimal supervision.
