We are the Navigation group in the Force Projection Sector at JHU/APL. We are seeking a senior data scientist to provide technical direction and develop data science solutions to help us ensure the US Navy has the most accurate and reliable navigation systems in the world. You will be joining our team of hardworking engineers, software developers, and analysts committed to advancing the state-of-the-art in performance evaluation of the nation’s strategic weapons systems throughout their lifecycle. As a member of our team, you will...
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams to develop data collection, processing, and analysis efforts to assess the performance of a navigation systems for various US Navy platforms
- Provide technical direction and leadership to navigation subject matter experts on the use of data science techniques for answering critical questions and solving technical challenges with navigation systems
- Develop models and simulations to describe data, predict events, and prescribe a course of action that directly reflect stakeholder’s needs
- Acquire domain knowledge in the field of maritime navigation and use that insight to build forward-thinking analytical solutions to test and evaluate prototype and operational navigation systems
- Use internal funding opportunities to shape the direction of future research
- Circulate knowledge by articulating ideas clearly through effective visualizations, papers, and presentations to technical staff, management, and government decision makers
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Masters or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field and 5 years of relevant professional experience
- Have a demonstrated track record of excellence in technical leadership or project management from concept development through execution and close out
- Have experience developing AI/ML algorithms and/or translating mathematical concepts using efficient and well-documented code
- Strong proficiency in developing analytical pipelines, data science applications and dashboard tools, and statistical and machine learning methodologies for specific quantitative goals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to articulate complex technical issues for a wide range of audiences
- Have an interest in learning about maritime navigation systems
- Have experience with Python and/or MATLAB
- Have experience with using version control software, such as Git
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Knowledge of MLOps, Agile, and DevOps processes
- Have experience designing and implementing AI/ML algorithms for time series data
- Have demonstrated understanding of US Navy surface and subsurface navigation concepts
- Have familiarity with US Navy Strategic Systems Programs technical and programmatic processes
- Have experience in writing technical proposals or other forms of business development
- Are skilled at building meaningful relationships across organizational boundaries
- Hold an active Top Secret security clearance
