PEDIATRIC CANCER EDUCATION SUPPORT NAVIGATOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation seeks a full-time Pediatric Cancer Education Support Navigator for the Charlottesville region. This position will assess the educational and developmental needs of children receiving treatment at UVA Children's Hospital and assist families in accessing appropriate accommodations and services in school or community agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a resource for and liaison between the family, school division, and medical team.
  • Obtain necessary medical and educational releases and maintain documentation of all information exchanges from parents/guardians, schools, and medical institutions.
  • Review student educational records to assess current levels of academic functioning and evaluate the need for further observations or assessments.
  • Review & assess students' developmental and educational strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. Request assessments as needed.
  • Communicate results of educational assessments to parents/guardians and appropriate medical personnel.
  • Consult with parents in the clinic setting to address educational concerns, offering guidance on appropriate next steps, available resources, and educational regulations and policies.
  • Accompany parent to school meetings to address the late effects of treatment and the accommodations needed in the school setting.
  • Discuss with the school-based team the possibility of a 504 plan or IEP to address accommodations needed.
  • Discuss with parents and the school-based team to determine if ESL services are needed or are being provided in the school setting.
  • Participate as an ASK education support navigator team member by attending educational training and staff retreats.
  • Support ASK initiatives to provide family & financial support, community & connection, and educational programs to childhood cancer families within the treatment center and the community.
  • Frequent travel within the Charlottesville region to attend school meetings and occasional travel throughout Virginia to attend training programs and staff retreats.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE:

  • Preferred Master of Education degree with an emphasis in special education or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience.
  • Ability to build relationships across a diverse population.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning within a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluent in English.

This is a 40-hour/week, in-person position. The salary range for this position starts at $78,000. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
