Channel One Regional Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, operates to secure donated, purchased, and government commodity food for distribution to member non-profit agencies and programs serving food insecure individuals and families across 14 counties in SE Minnesota and La Crosse County, Wisconsin. We are seeking a qualified Operations Director to lead our warehouse operations, including inventory, shipping, receiving, and trucking to support our mission “to strengthen food access and build healthy communities.”

Position Summary:

The Director of Operations is responsible for the overall supervision and orderly operations of all aspects of the Channel One Food Bank and its warehouse, its facilities and equipment, paid and unpaid staff, product distribution, transportation, and daily operations.

Along with Food Bank operations, this position holds responsibility for the management, control and record-keeping of all warehouse inventory, including donated, purchased, and government product, ensuring proper handling, storage, sorting, distribution and transportation of product in compliance with guidelines and policies of Channel One, Feeding America, AIB, MN Dept. of Human Services, and other state and federal agencies.

The Director of Operations is responsible for the direct supervision of the Warehouse and Purchasing Manager, Inventory Control and Receiving Supervisor, and Operations Specialist, and indirectly oversees warehouse associates, repack projects coordinator, and truck drivers. This includes interviewing/hiring, employee relations, goal setting, problem-solving and performance evaluation and discipline.

The Director of Operations is a member of the organization’s Senior Management Team and serves as its chief safety and disaster preparedness officer.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure proper handling, storage, distribution and transportation of food bank inventory, including retail rescue and corporate donations.
  • Oversee all food bank invoicing, billing, and record keeping, to ensure timeliness and accuracy.
  • Reviewing and responding to donation offerings from the Minnesota Cluster, Feeding America, and other food banks in the network with a goal of maximizing the quantity and variety of food made available to participating agencies.
  • Maintaining compliance with all internal and external monitoring guidelines and policies as established by Channel One, AIB, Feeding America, MN Dept. of Human Services, and other state and federal agencies.
  • Overseeing Channel One’s purchase program and allocation and distribution of product to the Channel One Food Shelf and other programs.
  • Serving as Channel One’s chief safety and disaster preparedness officer.
  • Supervising Food Bank and warehouse staff.
  • Participating in budget planning, managing specific budget items, and reporting program activities.
  • Implementing an accurate inventory control system to ensure correct records are maintained of products received and distributed, including donated food and food from government programs, ensuring that a full physical inventory is conducted on a regular basis and additional inventory control measures are implemented as needed.
  • Overseeing regular and preventative maintenance for Channel One facilities, building and grounds and coordinating repairs and working with contractors for the delivery of services, as needed.
  • Purchasing non-office building equipment, as needed and budgeted and assisting Finance Director with management and update of fixed asset schedule.
  • Ensuring proper record keeping and maintenance on fleet of trucks, cars, vans and other company vehicles and compliance with all applicable trucking laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Providing for a dispatch and routing system to maximize efficiency of food pick-up and delivery.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in warehouse/distribution, or facilities management, including at least three years in a management role leading and supervising employees
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Experience in working with integrated inventory/accounting software
  • Financial and budgeting knowledge/experience
  • Knowledge of latest warehousing and distribution technology and procedures, food handling/safety, including AIB
  • High level of analytical, data interpretation, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and supervisory skills
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel and database/spreadsheet experience
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • IT experience helpful
  • Knowledge of food banking a plus

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $68,500.00 - $72,010.00 per year
