Heat and Vent (HVAC) Mechanic (multiple shifts)

Job Description

HEAT AND VENT (HVAC) MECHANIC, Facilities-Repair and Maintenance (R&M), (multiple openings and shifts), to repair and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration for MIT buildings and equipment.  Will inspect and test heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to ensure proper functioning; operate and maintain steam heating systems, HVAC controls, gas- and oil-fired heating systems and boilers, water treatment, and refrigeration systems; troubleshoot, repair, and install pneumatic electronic temperature control systems; maintain, repair, and rebuild pumps, ice machines, air compressors, and other building systems equipment; receive work order assignments, order materials, and complete tasks accurately with detailed written comments provided on work orders upon completion; complete time entry and return work orders to supervisor on a daily basis with comments; perform duties in accordance with MSDAs, signage, and general instructions; perform scheduled preventative maintenance on building equipment, including lubricating components, changing filters, repacking valves, and adjusting and replacing belts; clean work areas and maintain tools and equipment; and provide customers with information about the progress of work. 

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  high school diploma or its equivalent; five years’ work experience in applicable trade/field or formal controls training in mechanical operations and maintenance; driver’s license; knowledge of environmental rooms such as Harris Environmental; ability to read ladder diagrams, blueprints, and schematics; and ability to lift weights of up to 50 lbs.  PREFERRED:  EPA universal refrigerant recovery certificate/license, MA oil burner license and certification, sheet metal license, and MA refrigeration technician certification; experience working in labs; and a general understanding of building automation systems.  Job #21280

Schedules:       
Monday through Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
Monday through Friday, 3:00 – 11:00 P.M.
Monday and Thursday through Sunday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.  (Tuesday and Wednesday off)
Monday through Friday, 7:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.

Working Conditions: ascending/descending stairs; traversing the campus; moving about the jobsite and machinery to access equipment; remaining stationary for extended periods of time; and working from ladders, scaffolds, and other above ground locations such as roofs.  Personal protective equipment must be worn as required by the specific assignment. Will be required to wear MIT-provided ARC flash rated clothing.  Environment contains dust, odors, and fumes, high levels of noise and temperature extremes. Work will be performed near steam and moving machinery, in tight areas and confined spaces such as manholes and crawl spaces, and with and around chemicals and solvents.  Some work performed in research labs and animal facilities and outdoors in inclement weather.

Employees who are assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel.  During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisor, regardless of any public announcement that the Institute is closed.  Other employees, who work a regular established work schedule, are not considered essential personnel but may be required to work other shifts on an as needed basis.

MIT will conduct a background check (including checking criminal records) for finalists. For current MIT SEIU members, this background check will be done for finalists who are bidding for a promotion or for a voluntary transfer to another classification or seniority unit.
