Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The part-time teacher assistant is responsible to assist the teacher in the planning and execution of a developmentally appropriate program including the immediate coordination and overall operation of his/her classroom. This includes the planning and provision of a high-quality early childhood experience for pre-school children that meets all local, state, national federal laws and regulations for child care centers. The part-time teacher assistant will need to have the ability to work and communicate with children and families of diverse cultures and languages. In addition, The National Association for the Education of Young Children guidelines, Texas Health and Human Services Commission Minimum Standards, and Laredo College Child Development Program goals must be adhered to.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in promoting and supervising developmentally appropriate activities that foster social emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development through play, and through structured activities, individually and in groups, according to the children’s developmental needs and interests.
- Assist in the supervising of children to ensure a healthy and safe environment for children at all times.
- Assist in assessing and monitoring on-going basis children's individual needs and strengths and utilize them for planning classroom instruction.
- Assist in creating and maintaining a classroom environment that meet all State and Federal requirements and meet the developmental needs of children.
- Assist in maintaining adequate teaching materials and facilitating children's active exploration of materials, activities, and environment.
- Model best practices in assigned classrooms and use teaching strategies based on children's individual needs and LC Child Development program goals.
- Use positive approaches to guide children's behavior towards active involvement in learning and the development of self-discipline.
- Assist in providing and maintaining a neat organized classroom.
- Must be responsible for equipment, materials, and supplies in assigned classroom.
- Assist in monitoring, assisting, and coordinating LC students, and volunteers in daily classroom activities for provision of quality services.
- . Maintain written and verbal communication with families in English and Spanish and assist in meeting the families’ needs.
- Assist in promoting family engagement.
- Assist in develop and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans for the children.
- Assist in collecting and maintaining all classroom related documentation required by LC.
- Assist in overseeing the sign-in and sign-out of all classroom children.
- Assist in administering required assessments.
- Maintain daily attendance.
- Assist in coordinating the planning of daily activities and field trips.
- Attend staff development activities as directed for personal professional development and growth as a teacher assistant
- Attend staff meetings, trainings, open houses and other program activities as assigned by the Center Director.
- Assist in the implementation of the Child Adult Care Food Program in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintain FERPA standards as applied to public institutions of higher learning.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Assistant Director, Director, and Department Chair
- Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
- Must have a High School Diploma
- A minimum One-year Certificate in Child Development or be currently enrolled in Child Development courses or related field.
- Must have a minimum of 9 to 12 months working with young children 18 months to 5 years old in a licensed child care facility or at least 1 Child Development Internship.
- Must agree to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification, Food Handlers Certificate and participate in at least thirty (30) clock hours of child development training on an annual basis.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations for child care centers and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Must be able to provide, individual and/or group direction, positive guidance and supervision of children in the performance of developmental activities.
- Must maintain emotional control under stress, and be able to work with frequent interruptions.
- Must be physically and mentally able to provide a supportive, safe, and caring environment for children.
- The part-time teacher assistant must have a cooperative attitude and be able to communicate effectively with children, families, students, campus visitors, and college staff.
- All THHSC Licensing requirements must be maintained at all times.
- Experienced in the use of computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.

Physical Requirements
Walking, standing, moderate lifting (no more than 75 lbs.), carrying, and bending.
Occasionally the employee may need to stand and/or walk for a prolonged period of time.
Must be able to perform physical tasks that are necessary for the needs and safety of the children.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment.
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.
Special Conditions
Must complete a criminal background check,
FBI Fingerprints check.
Be cleared of any history of substantiated child abuse or neglect.
Obtain a TB test showing absence of Tuberculosis.
Notarized Licensing Affidavit,
Annual Influenza Vaccine and Physical Exam.
Immediate supervisor may assign other duties.
May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed.
May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
